So 2018 has ended. If you are like me, you had a year with highs and lows.
Some of my highs included completing my Masters of Arts in Gifted Education, completing and passing my dossier (NM teachers know what a challenge this can be), and getting my new teacher's license. It declares that I am a Level Three-A Instructional Leader for K-12 Special Education with a side of TESOL and Gifted Education (endorsements). Trying to move into the instructional leadership role has been my next challenge. I am working with a campus leadership team and our district Gifted advisory committee, but with that comes working through politics and agendas that I didn't have to face in my room. This leads to the lows. My lows this year centered around those agendas and politics and the never-ending struggle with burnout.
So, on this first day of 2019, I can't help but think about what the rest of the year will hold. What am I going to do differently to amp up my instruction and motivate my students? What direction will I go in being an "Instructional Leader"? How will I put my new degree to better use? What difference will I make? It can be exciting and overwhelming to come back to school after the Winter Break. Getting to know my students over the past semester gives me a edge up compared to coming back to school in August. But old habits die hard and change can be difficult mid-(school)-year.
So here's my personal list:
- Becoming a Google Certified Educator (Level 1)
- Incorporating digital citizenship into my instruction
- Researching and incorporating brain based learning strategies into my instruction
- Increasing my blogging
- Focusing on self-care
Self-care should really be number 1. Even though I have ambitious goals, I don't want to set myself up for burnout. So to balance that out, I'll share a meme I saw today pop up on my Facebook feed.
